1. Introduction

This Acceptable Use Policy ("AUP") governs your use of the Signa Technologies AS ("Signa") trademark intelligence API, website (signa.so), and related services (the "Service"). This AUP is incorporated into and forms part of the Terms of Service.

Signa reserves the right to update this AUP at any time. Material changes will be communicated via email or through the Service at least 14 days before they take effect. Your continued use of the Service after the effective date constitutes acceptance.

2. General Principles

You agree to use the Service responsibly, lawfully, and in a manner consistent with its intended purpose: providing trademark intelligence to support informed business decisions. You must comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and third-party rights when using the Service.

3. Prohibited Uses

You may not use the Service to:

3.1 Trademark Abuse and Bad-Faith Activities

  • File bad-faith trademark applications based on results obtained through the Service (e.g., registering marks you have no intent to use, solely to block others or extract settlement payments)
  • Engage in cybersquatting, typosquatting, or domain-name abuse informed by Service data
  • Systematically identify and target other parties' trademarks for infringement, counterfeiting, or passing off
  • File fraudulent trademark applications or provide false information to trademark offices using Service outputs
  • Engage in trademark trolling, including mass filings of oppositions or cancellation petitions based on automated analysis without legitimate commercial interest

3.2 Data Misuse and Unauthorized Access

  • Scrape, bulk-download, or systematically extract data from the Service for the purpose of building a competing product, service, or database
  • Resell, redistribute, or sublicense raw data obtained through the Service as a standalone dataset or data feed
  • Access or attempt to access the Service using another customer's API Key, credentials, or account
  • Share, publish, or expose your API Key in public code repositories, client-side code, or any publicly accessible location
  • Circumvent, disable, or interfere with any security, authentication, rate-limiting, or access-control mechanisms
  • Probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of the Service or any related infrastructure without prior written authorization from Signa
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Service's software, algorithms, or AI/ML models

3.3 Misrepresentation

  • Represent or imply that Service outputs constitute legal advice, legal opinion, or a definitive determination of trademark rights
  • Hold yourself out as providing legal services based on Service outputs, unless you are a licensed attorney providing independent legal judgment
  • Represent or imply that Signa has endorsed, certified, or validated your products, services, or trademark decisions
  • Use the Signa name, logo, or trademarks in a misleading manner or without prior written consent
  • Submit Service outputs to trademark offices, courts, or administrative bodies as official legal analysis, due diligence reports, or attorney work product

3.4 Harmful or Illegal Activities

  • Use the Service for any purpose that violates applicable laws, regulations, or third-party rights in any jurisdiction
  • Use the Service to facilitate counterfeiting, piracy, or the sale of goods that infringe third-party intellectual property rights
  • Use the Service in connection with harassment, stalking, threats, or intimidation of trademark holders or other parties
  • Use the Service to gather competitive intelligence about specific individuals (as opposed to brands or companies) in a manner that violates their privacy rights
  • Transmit malware, viruses, or malicious code through the Service

3.5 System Abuse

  • Exceed your plan's rate limits or usage quotas through technical workarounds, multiple accounts, or other means
  • Create multiple accounts to circumvent restrictions, bans, or usage limits
  • Use automated tools to generate excessive API requests beyond your plan's intended capacity
  • Interfere with or disrupt the Service's infrastructure, other customers' access, or the performance of the Service
  • Use the Service in a way that places an unreasonable or disproportionate load on Signa's infrastructure

4. Responsible Use of AI-Generated Outputs

The Service uses artificial intelligence to generate similarity analyses, risk assessments, and clearance recommendations. When using these AI-generated outputs, you agree to:

  • Treat all AI-generated outputs as informational starting points, not definitive conclusions
  • Apply independent human judgment before making business or legal decisions based on outputs
  • Consult qualified legal counsel for matters involving trademark registration, enforcement, or dispute resolution
  • Not rely solely on the Service for time-sensitive or high-stakes trademark decisions (such as opposition filing deadlines)
  • Report any outputs that appear materially inaccurate, misleading, or harmful to support@signa.so

5. API-Specific Rules

5.1 API Key Security

  • Keep your API Key confidential and stored securely (e.g., environment variables, secrets manager)
  • Never embed API Keys in client-side code, mobile applications, or publicly accessible repositories
  • Rotate your API Key immediately if you suspect it has been compromised
  • Use separate API Keys for development, staging, and production environments where possible

5.2 Rate Limits and Fair Usage

  • Respect the rate limits associated with your plan tier
  • Implement exponential backoff when receiving rate-limit responses (HTTP 429)
  • Cache results where appropriate to reduce unnecessary API calls
  • Do not attempt to circumvent rate limits through multiple accounts, IP rotation, or other technical means

5.3 Integration Requirements

  • Identify your application in API requests using a descriptive User-Agent header
  • Handle errors gracefully and do not retry failed requests aggressively
  • Follow Signa's API documentation and versioning guidelines
  • Do not rely on undocumented endpoints or behaviors

6. Content and Output Guidelines

6.1 Attribution

When publicly displaying or sharing results obtained from the Service (e.g., in a blog post, report, or customer-facing application), you are encouraged (but not required) to attribute the data source as "Powered by Signa" or "Data from Signa." You must not, however, imply that Signa endorses your conclusions or decisions.

6.2 Downstream Use

If you integrate the Service into your own products or services:

  • You are responsible for ensuring your end users understand that Service outputs are informational and do not constitute legal advice
  • You must include appropriate disclaimers in your own terms of service and user-facing materials
  • You are responsible for your end users' compliance with this AUP
  • You must not strip or obscure any disclaimers, confidence scores, or caveats provided by the Service

7. Reporting Violations

If you become aware of any use of the Service that violates this AUP, please report it to abuse@signa.so. Include as much detail as possible, including the nature of the violation and any relevant evidence.

Signa takes all reports seriously and will investigate promptly. Reporters will not face retaliation for good-faith reports.

8. Enforcement

8.1 Investigation

Signa reserves the right to investigate any suspected violation of this AUP. Investigation may include reviewing API usage patterns, account activity, and other relevant data.

8.2 Consequences

Violations of this AUP may result in one or more of the following actions, at Signa's sole discretion:

  • Warning: Written notice describing the violation and required corrective action
  • Temporary suspension: Suspension of API access for a defined period pending resolution
  • Rate-limit reduction: Reduction of your API rate limits or usage quotas
  • Account termination: Permanent termination of your account and API access
  • Legal action: Pursuit of legal remedies, including injunctive relief and damages

8.3 Graduated Response

For first-time, minor, or unintentional violations, Signa will generally issue a warning and provide a reasonable opportunity to cure the violation before taking more severe action. Signa reserves the right to take immediate action (including suspension or termination) for serious violations that pose a risk to other customers, the Service, or third parties.

8.4 Appeals

If you believe an enforcement action was taken in error, you may appeal by contacting legal@signa.so within 14 days. Appeals will be reviewed by a senior member of the Signa team and you will receive a response within 10 business days.
