Understanding Nice Classification

What is the Nice Classification?
The Nice Classification (NCL) is an international system established by the Nice Agreement (1957) used by trademark offices worldwide to categorize goods and services. It is maintained by WIPO and updated annually to reflect evolving markets.
How many classes are there?
There are 45 classes in total. Classes 1-34 cover goods (physical products), and Classes 35-45 cover services. Most businesses file in 1-3 classes depending on their product and service scope.
Why does correct classification matter?
Trademark protection is limited to the classes you register in. Choosing the wrong classes can leave your brand unprotected in key markets, or waste money on irrelevant filings. Accurate classification also avoids office actions and delays during examination.
How does filing cost work?
Most trademark offices charge per class. For example, the USPTO charges $350 per class. Filing in 3 classes would cost $1,050 in government fees alone. Other offices like EUIPO include one class in the base fee with additional classes at a reduced rate.
