About TÜRKPATENT

What is TÜRKPATENT?

Türk Patent ve Marka Kurumu (TÜRKPATENT) is the Turkish national authority responsible for examining and registering trademarks, patents, designs, utility models, and geographical indications in Turkey. Headquartered in Ankara and operating under the Ministry of Industry and Technology, TÜRKPATENT received roughly 366,500 domestic trademark applications in 2024 — ranking Turkey sixth worldwide for trademark filings and second only to EUIPO within Europe, ahead of every other national office on the continent. WIPO data placed Turkey fourth globally for domestic trademark registrations in 2024 with ~284,800 registrations granted. By any measure, TÜRKPATENT is one of the busiest national trademark offices on the planet, and the corpus of historical Turkish trademark records is well into the millions.

The legal foundation for the modern Turkish register is Industrial Property Law No. 6769, which entered into force on 10 January 2017. The IP Code consolidated five separate decree-laws — including the previous trademark decree-law No. 556 of 1995 — into a single statute covering trademarks, patents, designs, utility models, and geographical indications. The 2017 reform shortened the opposition window from three months to two months from the publication of the application in the Official Trademark Bulletin (and the opposition period cannot be extended), introduced administrative cancellation procedures handled by TÜRKPATENT itself rather than the courts, and modernized the absolute-grounds examination process. Applications filed before 10 January 2017 are still assessed under the old Decree-Law 556 regime; applications filed on or after that date fall under Law 6769 — a split that matters when querying historical prosecution data. Turkey has been a Madrid Protocol member since 1 January 1999, so trademark protection in Turkey can be obtained either through a direct national TÜRKPATENT filing or by designating Turkey (TR) through a WIPO International Registration.

TÜRKPATENT exposes the register through EPATS (the e-Government services portal at epats.turkpatent.gov.tr) and through the public trademark search at online.turkpatent.gov.tr — both also accessible via Turkey's e-Devlet single-sign-on at turkiye.gov.tr. The public search is comprehensive and free, with bilingual Turkish/English UI and lookups by mark text, application number, registration number, owner name, Nice class, and trademark type (well-known marks, geographical indications, sound marks, motion marks, etc.). There is no documented public bulk-data API or programmatic REST feed for third-party developers — TÜRKPATENT publishes the register through the web UI and EPATS, not through a developer-grade endpoint comparable to USPTO ODP or EUIPO eSearch. Signa is building its TÜRKPATENT connector for Q4 2026; on launch it will normalize the Turkish-language register, the Law 6769 event vocabulary, and Madrid designations of Turkey into the same unified schema used for USPTO, EUIPO, and every other office.

Unique features

  • One of the highest-volume national trademark offices in the world — ~366,500 domestic trademark applications in 2024, ranking Turkey sixth globally and second in Europe after EUIPO
  • Industrial Property Law No. 6769 (in force 10 January 2017) — consolidated trademark Decree-Law 556 (1995) and four other IP decree-laws into a single modern IP statute covering trademarks, patents, designs, utility models, and geographical indications
  • Two-month opposition window from Bulletin publication, shortened from three months under the 2017 reform and not extendable — one of the shorter opposition windows globally and a notable scheduling constraint for watch services
  • Madrid Protocol member since 1 January 1999 — Turkey can be designated through WIPO instead of filed directly at TÜRKPATENT; Madrid TR designations come through the WIPO feed, direct national filings live in TÜRKPATENT
  • EPATS — the official Turkish e-Government services portal at epats.turkpatent.gov.tr, integrated with Turkey's e-Devlet single-sign-on at turkiye.gov.tr and the canonical interface for filing and prosecution
  • Bilingual public search at online.turkpatent.gov.tr — free trademark lookup with Turkish and English UI, supporting mark text, application/registration number, owner, Nice class, and trademark-type filters (well-known marks, geographical indications, sound marks, motion marks)
  • Turkish-language register — status codes, examiner notices, opposition decisions, and Bulletin entries are published in Turkish; normalization requires a Turkish-to-canonical mapping that Signa is building ahead of launch
  • Pre-2017 vs post-2017 prosecution split — applications filed before 10 January 2017 are still assessed under Decree-Law 556, while later filings fall under Law 6769; historical queries need to be aware of which regime applies
