About PRV

What is PRV?

Patent- och registreringsverket (PRV) is the Swedish national authority responsible for examining and registering trademarks, patents, and designs in Sweden. It operates under the Ministry of Climate and Enterprise and maintains offices in Sundbyberg (greater Stockholm) and Söderhamn. PRV's trademark register holds roughly 601,000 records dating back to 1885, with 390-1,100 records changing each day across new filings, status updates, and deletions.

Because Sweden is an EU member state, most applicants who want broad European coverage file an EU trademark (EUTM) at EUIPO — a single EUTM covers all 27 EU countries including Sweden. PRV's national register exists for the case where applicants only need Swedish protection, want to claim a national seniority date before extending via Madrid, or are responding to local prior rights that would block a wider EUTM. PRV processes roughly 15,000 national filings annually — a small fraction of the EUTM volume covering Sweden.

PRV publishes its full register openly under CC0 1.0 as daily XML diffs in the OAMI TM-Search (ST.66-derived) schema. Signa ingests the explicit operationCode-keyed inserts, updates, and deletes within hours of publication, normalizes the bilingual Swedish/English event vocabulary, extracts the chain-of-title information embedded in event text, and exposes Swedish national filings, EU member-state coverage logic, and Madrid Protocol designations of Sweden through the same unified schema as every other office.

Unique features

  • Madrid Protocol member — Sweden can be designated through WIPO; Madrid designations of SE are routed through WIPO, while direct national filings live in PRV
  • Swedish-language register — examination, opposition, and official correspondence in Swedish; event vocabulary switched from Swedish free-text to English codes around 2024
  • 3-month post-publication opposition window — any third party may oppose within three months of the registration being published in the Swedish Trade Marks Gazette
  • Direct-national path for Sweden-only protection — useful when EUTM is blocked by EU prior rights or the applicant only does business in Sweden
  • Fast examination — PRV typically completes formal examination and publication within a few months of filing, faster than the average national EU office
  • EUIPO Convergence Programme participant — Sweden harmonizes practice with EUIPO on classification, absolute grounds, and graphical representation
  • Explicit operationCode in the data feed — PRV is one of the only national offices that publishes row-level Insert/Update/Delete operations, making diff handling fully deterministic
  • Historical depth — register covers continuous filings since 1885, including the pre-1900 corpus that most modern trademark systems exclude
Comparison

PRV FTP open data vs Signa.

PRV publishes the full Swedish trademark register as a daily FTP feed under CC0 1.0 — there's no REST API, no JSON, no search endpoint. You get ZIP archives of OAMI TM-Search XML files (~888 MB compressed for the full snapshot, plus daily diff ZIPs). Here's what changes when you use Signa instead.

DimensionPRV FTP open dataSigna
Setup
FTP client + shared cred, parse ST.66-derived XML, build daily ZIP-diff watcher and ingestion store
Sign up, copy API key, curl the endpoint
Data shape
Swedish XML with bilingual event vocabulary (pre-2024 Swedish free-text, post-2024 English codes), chain-of-title embedded in event strings
Normalized JSON with canonical status object, parsed chain-of-title relationships, and a unified schema shared with every other office
Search
No search at all — bulk XML only, you build your own indexer
Full-text, fuzzy, phonetic, and image search out of the box across PRV, EUIPO, WIPO, and 18 other offices
Freshness
Daily diff ZIPs published ~00:30 Europe/Stockholm; you write the FTP listing + ingestion + dedup pipeline
Pre-ingested by Signa within hours of publication, with operationCode-aware deletes and explicit retraction flags
Coverage
PRV national filings only — add EUIPO for EUTMs covering Sweden, WIPO for Madrid SE designations, each as a separate integration
PRV + EUIPO + WIPO Madrid + 18 other offices through the same endpoint; filter by office or query Swedish coverage across all three sources at once

Working straight off PRV's FTP feed is reasonable when you only care about Swedish national filings and have engineering time to handle the FTP semaphore, ZIP streaming, bilingual event vocabulary, and embedded chain-of-title parsing yourself. Signa exists for the case where neither of those is true — especially when you also need EUTMs covering Sweden and Madrid designations of SE in the same query.
